There are two things that seem to take up most of my time at the moment, and they are Forza 7 & Project Cars 2. I’m spending a lot of time on both, and having a lot of fun. The two can’t be compared against each other, and although they are themed around racing and cars, they are entirely different games. It felt like comparing sex to porn, but that led my mind to how Forza 7 really is what porn is to sex! Let me elaborate with these 7 points that Forza 7 compares to porn…

1: Not the real thing. Flashy but fun & impressive

The more i spend on Forza 7, the more i get a strange feeling of a dream world, where everything good and fun, is superficial! Yes it is a sim racing game, and it all is fake, but with Forza 7 it has that synthetic sweetener aftertaste that leaves you satisfied, but overstimulated.

It started with the fabricated sunset or sunrise finishes after a thunderstorm. Yes they are breathtaking, but after a couple of days, where this happens mostly all the time, it feels fake.

After a few days on the game, i know that i am being fooled into beautiful but fabricated scenarios and dreamed up landscapes, but i am enjoying it at the same time!

2: More accessible that the real thing

Sometimes, a full blown race and 100% focus, is not what you want to spend your friday evening on. You want a quickie, or just sit around and do some relaxed casual and fun racing, instead of sweating lap after lap on getting things just right.

Sometimes you just want a quickie, and not have to spend a whole day trying…

Forza 7 has always been accused of being arcady and not realistic. Instead of working on the realism of the game, and become one of many realistic sim racing games, they seem to have embraced the arcade branding, and used it as their selling point. They have become (or have always been) one of the most accessible but challenging racing games available.

3: AI are ordinary actors

For those of you studying to become a plumber to get loads of the sex, you’d better reconsider. It’s all a lie! On the other hand, Mario is a nice guy, so you’ve got that going for you…

After repetitive close race finishes in career mode, i got slightly suspicious. You can have a decent fight with a drivatar (they are actually a lot better now!) but once you pass them, they will lose all will to live, and stay behind you for the rest of the race.

Even cars that passed you like a rocket on the start straight, when the race started, will passively stay behind you once you’ve passed them (dificulty = Pro). That is, right up to the last lap, on the straight up to the finish. Here, the car in front, or the car behind, will often get dangerously close, to give that Kodak “Share the moment” photo-finish shot to end the race in a high note

It is really strange how their performance fluctuates during a race, and that you somehow can catch a car that you would not think you had a chance against. Of course, nobody wants to watch porn with a guy who is having potency problems, but things just felt a bit too obviously contrived.

4: Dramatic Climaxes

Similar to the close finishes, Forza 7 seems to have artificially enhanced things that get your heartbeat up. Hard hits are impressive, and the way the camera sways when you hit a wall, or are hit from behind, are breathtaking! Focus has moved from good passes, best laptimes or good strategic calls, to the palatable here and now effects of crashes.

The shift in focus on racing achievements, skill and abilities, is very similar to how the porn industry sideswipes emotions to the actual physical slamming.

This is very cool and brings some degree of fascination to something that previously was annoying.

5: Predictable Story line

After racing against AI for a few races, you know what is going to happen mostly all of the time. They will stick to the racing line, they will brake too hard as soon as the braking line turns red (even where this is a mistake) and they will be slow at accelerating out of a corner. Yes this might indicate that you need to ramp up the AI difficulty, but all this predictable driving, is made up by super fast straight line speed, and mostly no mistakes.

It all makes for races where you more or less know what is going to happen, over and over again and allows you to pretty easily calculate where on the track you can attack and pass safely. This has the side effect of AI of the same difficulty, being substantially faster on tracks with fewer corners, where they don’t get the chance to lose time without having to make it too obvious and brake on a straight.

6: “It’s not a Fetish, it’s a Niche!”

Porn sites are catching up with the categorycount of sites like Ebay and Amazon. There is something for you, no matter what you’re looking for. If you find something you were not looking for, you’ll almost be dumbfound!

Same is happening to Forza 7. There are “niche” cars, races, sessions and showcase events to satisfy any carnut and taste. Like most niches, they can be difficult to understand, if you’re not into it. Non the less, it is fascinating to see how passionate people can be, about things you are not.

That said, it is impressive that Forza 7 has managed to include so specific niche areas of motorsport, into a game that is meant to target such a wide audience. It is a very remarkable way of shooting with a shotgun and hitting most of the set up targets! (We’re not doing a porn reference here.. sorry)

7: Littered with distractions

I repeatedly felt that the game wanted to “pull me away” from the actual racing, and tell me about those shiny crates, multiple levels of progression, car collection albums, mods and even made me buy cars that i didn’t even want or need!

It’s like they don’t want to let you to do what you really are here to do

Similar to ads on a site, pop ups, popunders, and other dodgy attention grabbing methods, i kept having to seek back to the racing track for slightly too short sessions of what i really am playing this game for. It is finely tuned though, so that you still feel it’s worth putting up with. As most of us, eventually just will use the multiplayer features of the game, we probably won’t be bothered much with this in the long run.

Porn is Good

Besides the moral, religious or even ethical implications involved in porn, it is a huge industry with huge money being generated by the passion of mostly men. The porn industry is setting examples that have even been picked up by Google (preview video on hover) and have taken up sex education (SFW link) in a sober manner!

Although generally seen as a foxy and canny industry, it has come up or simply used marketing tools that show how well they understand their targeted audience. This is a huge  adulation to Forza 7, for sticking to, and targeting the people they believe they can make the best profit on. They might not be you and me, but i am sure that they have meticulously tested fine tuned the gameplay, maybe slightly more than they have the cars.

About The Author

I've been hooked on racing games, ever since the Burnout series back in the late 90s and after going through some painful years trying to learn the F1 series games, i am now hooked on Forza. I am not the fastest on the track, and not a fanatic, but i enjoy sim racing a lot, and try to get better and faster.
