Changing Gears

The one thing that will make you faster

Take control of the power

The first thing that you really want to learn how to use, is manual gears.

Honestly, i have been using automatic gears for way longer than i want to admit. My thinking was that until i get faster, manual gears are out of my reach. In a way this was true, but on the other hand, manual gears are so important, that you can’t get very fast, by not using them.

The reason is pretty simple. You take control of the engine power, and can decide when you want more, or when you need less. Especially corners will be a lot easier to handle, and you’ll be keeping on the race line easier.

Take your time

Manual reansmission, is not going to make you faster as soon as you turn it on. You’ll need to spend some time getting used to it. If you already drive a car with manual gears in real life, this should not take a long time though. It’s a little bit of more work, especially on the corners, and will feel hectic to start with. Personally, after 3-4 races, i wasn’t noticing it any more, and it really felt natural.
We’ll come up with an article on when to change gears soon, but basically you’ll want to gear up when you hit the rev limmiter, or gear down when you’re braking.

Manual with Clutch

Once you get used to manual gears, don’t get used to it too much. Manual gears will make you faster, because you get controll of the cars engine power. You’ll notice though, that some cars change gears very very slowly.

Using manual with clutch, will shorten your gear shift times, and allow you to change gears even faster.

Don’t try using the clutch as you would in a real life car. This is maybe possible on a 3 pedal set up, but to start with, and on a controller, you’ll just need to look at the clutch as an extra button.

Simply push the clutch and the gear up/down button simultaneusly (or as simulatneusly as possible) to make it work

Experiment in classes

Manual gears will bring a whole new dimension into the game, and you’ll have more factors to adjust, to improve you lap times and racing.

Not all cars need to change gears when the rev indicator reaches the red area. For some cars you’ll need to whift gears way into the red area, and other cars you’ll need to keep the revs pretty low.

Try to esperiment with your gearshifts, and when you should change gears. If you feel confident, and want to try some hardcore stuff, you can try to tune the gear lengths, to suit your style and track you’re driving on.

About The Author

I've been hooked on racing games, ever since the Burnout series back in the late 90s and after going through some painful years trying to learn the F1 series games, i am now hooked on Forza. I am not the fastest on the track, and not a fanatic, but i enjoy sim racing a lot, and try to get better and faster.
